For most of my life I have loved poetry written by the past masters of the art. I also enjoy reading most poetry forms with the exception of the so-called modern free verse poetry which seems to be popular today with so many pseudo-intellectuals. In my humble opinion, most of the modern day poems do not compare to the great older classic poems written by real masters of the art. Even though my favorite poetry forms are shorter forms like haiku, I also love the type of poems in this great collection.One Hundred and One Famous Poems, with a prose supplement by Roy Jay Cook is a classic reprint series by Forgotten Books. This wonderful collection has more than one hundred famous classic poems and here is a very small sample of this great collection: The Builders, The Day is Done, and The Children's Hour by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, America For Me by Henry Van Dyke, Be Strong by Maltbie Davenport Babcock, Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson, IF by Rudyard Kipling, I have a Rendezvous with Death by Alan Seeger, In Flander's Field by Lieut-Col John McCrae, O'Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman, Not in vain by Emily Dickinson, She Walks in Beauty by George Gordon Byron, The Snow Storm by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and The Time of the Year by William Shakespeare.
In conclusion, if you love beautiful classic poetry written by the great past masters you will love this collection. Even though this reprint copy is taken from the original text, and the copying is not the best it could probably have been; nevertheless, it still deserves the highest rating.

My only complaint is that it was billed as a hard cover which turned out to be the leather one also used at that time. I had an original hard cover which was destroyed in a tornado. But imagine my surprise when I opened this book to my very favorite poem and found a ribbon marker there. Obviously the previous owner liked that poem as much as I did.
This little book changed my life!
My first copy of this book was a paperback edition given to me at the age of sixteen, in 1951 (I still have the original book, and yes, I'm now 74 years young), at a school in Los Angeles, California that specialized in improving speech problems--of which I severely had. I would read and reread poems and speeches aloud from this book, which was a break through, in its own right. Previous to this little book, reading aloud was absolutely out of the question--it just didn't/couldn't/wouldn't happen. It wasn't that I didn't want to; it was simply beyond my capacity. The school, per se, did not help me, but the One Hundred And One Famous Poems certainly has. I keep extra copies on hand to give away to people who might benefit similarly to the way it has helped me. From that beginning I have for all intents and purposes overcome the speech problem; enjoyed Toastmasters for four years, while reaching the Advanced Toastmaster Silver Level of achievement; wrote a book on golf and taught my subject material (my wife and I together) in three golf classes, averaging 26 students, per year for twenty years at the college level (extended studies). My life definitely took an upturn as a direct result of this little book. My favorites for reading aloud are two poems and two speeches The Spider And The Fly, A Fable, by Mary Howitt (page 145); Home, by Edgar A. Guest (page 152) as read with a naturally acquired Scottish brogue, with much gusto; The Gettysburg Address, given by Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863 (page 173); The War Inevitable, 1775, by Patrick Henry (page 177); the speeches have helped me develop a voice (in my mind, anyway) that closely resembles how Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Henry might have sounded. My gratefulness and thankfulness for having this little book in my life is literally much beyond description of mere words. Enjoy!
I had this in paperback about 30 years ago and lost it. I’ve been trying to find it for the last 15 years and was delighted to find it on kindle! This has been my favorite book of poetry. I’m so glad to own it again.
If you love, or even like poetry just a bit, this is the one book to buy. A very nice selection of poetry from Shakespeare, Kipling, Longfellow, and the like make this a very good edition.
Now, if this guy likes this book so much, why did he call it the "almost ultimate" poetry book? Good Question! This volume was first published in 1958, and so leaves out a few of my favorite contemporary poets such as Robert Frost. BUT, other than that, this book is great!
By the way, this is a replacement for a book that I used while teaching, and my original was in really, really bad shape. I owned that one for way over 30 years.
Just bought this for my 15 year old daughter, This is the same poetry book I loved as a child. It's been so fun sharing my memories.
I ordered this book to be a birthday present for grandmother. She once owned it and wanted another. The copy that came was green and not the pictured red. It was a visual disappointment, since I was replacing a memory. However, after studying it, it was indeed the same book inside.After reading some poems to grandma, she no longer cared about the cover. I expressed my disappointment to the seller, who promptly, and without being asked, refunded my money and apologized. I appreciate the customer service and am even more pleased the book served its purpose. This is genuinely good book with many great reads. Well worth the money, regardless of the color of the cover.
I grew up with this book! My dad and I read it together, and the first poem he taught me "by heart" when I was only 3 1/2 was Emerson's "Rhodora." This is a classic collection of classic poems. An eight-year-old friend of mine just wrote her first poem, so I wanted to get her acquainted with great poetry and wanted this particular "blue" version as a gift for her. The condition of the book was even better than I had predicted (and better than mine, though mine was given by my father to my mother soon after they were married in 1940, so I had to keep that one).
